Exploring nature with children
The simplest of pastimes is at risk of being a thing of the past. We are talking about children spending time in nature. Kids might convince you that their day is better spent in front of the TV or playing Minecraft but don’t believe them. Get them outside! Why? Science says it’s good for them. Research consistently highlights the positive impact of outdoor experiences on a child’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Research on the benefits of nature for children
1. Nature improves children’s Cognitive Development:
A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology (Wells, 2000) found that exposure to nature enhances cognitive function in children. Nature provides a diverse sensory experience, stimulating a child’s curiosity and problem-solving skills. Whether it’s observing wildlife, exploring natural landscapes, or simply feeling the textures of leaves and rocks, these experiences contribute to cognitive growth and increased attention spans. Nature play is also, very often risky play, which is great for children’s overall development.

2. Nature Reduces Children’s Stress and Anxiety:
Kids now report feeling more stressed than ever. Nature acts as a natural stress reliever for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (2019) highlights that spending time in green spaces lowers cortisol levels. That reduces stress and anxiety. Exposure to nature has also been linked to improved emotional regulation, making it a crucial element in the overall mental health of children..…and thus their caregivers.
3. Children’s Physical Health is improved in nature:
Numerous studies, including research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (Hofferth & Curtin, 2006), emphasize the role of outdoor play in promoting physical health. Nature encourages physical activity, aiding in the development of motor skills, coordination, and overall fitness. From climbing trees to hiking trails, outdoor activities contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
4. Enhanced Creativity in Children:
Nature provides an open canvas for children to express themselves creatively. The Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (2009) suggests that exposure to natural environments stimulates imagination and creativity in children. Whether it’s building forts with sticks, making bookmarks out of things you’ve found in the woods, or inventing outdoor games, kids get creative outside!

5. Children Show Improved Social Skills in Nature:
Interacting with nature often involves group activities and cooperative play, fostering the development of social skills. A study in the Journal of Leisure Research (Bell & Dyment, 2006) found that outdoor experiences promote teamwork, communication, and conflict resolution among children.
6. Nature Improves Sleep Patterns in Children:
Nature plays a crucial role in regulating children’s circadian rhythms and promoting healthy sleep patterns. Research published in the Journal of Sleep Research (Gupta et al., 2017) suggests that exposure to natural light during the day helps synchronize the body’s internal clock, leading to better sleep quality at night. Time spent outdoors, especially in the evening, facilitates the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep, contributing to more restful and rejuvenating sleep for children. Establishing a connection with nature supports a natural sleep-wake cycle, fostering overall well-being and optimal cognitive function during waking hours. So the next time your kid asks to go for a quick bike ride outside after dinner, say yes!

7. Therapeutic Benefits for Neurodiverse Children:
There are particular benefits for neurodiverse children. Research published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders (Kuo & Faber Taylor, 2004) indicates that exposure to natural settings can significantly reduce symptoms associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
Gear for getting your kids outside
You do not need anything (assuming the weather is pleasant). Just get out and go!
There are a few things that might make things a bit easier for you though. If you have a baby or toddler, you might want a good baby carrier or a great all-terrain stroller (We live Bumbleride Indie and Bob Gear). Ergo baby carriers offer the most support for the person wearing it. They are bulky when not in use though so this is a great compact/travel option. We like bumbags/fanny packs too to keep hands free. Inside, you can choose to keep a few first-aid items on hand such as a band-aid or two, sunscreen, or bug spray, depending on your area if needed.
If you are going on a muddy adventure, these coveralls are very popular. Rain boots can be worn as well for easy cleaning. To add some interest, you could have the kids bring magnifying glasses, Binoculars, outdoor explorer kits, slacklines, bug kits, etc. Again though they are not at all necessary. They can be fun if your kids are already outdoor enthusiasts or if they need a bit of motivation.
How often should you get your kids outside?
As often as you can. While forests and oceans provide a dreamy, multisensory environment, they are not accessible to everyone. If your neighborhood has a playground, go there. If your streets are tree-lined, go for a walk after dinner. If you have a small balcony, add some plants to it and involve your kids in caring for them. If you feel you have difficulty incorporating nature, just get your kids outside! Encourage them to bathe in the sun’s rays and jump in muddy puddles. Go for walks before bed or stargaze on your lawn or balcony. Nature is everywhere but inside.
